Protect Yourself and Your Information

Top Ten Useful Security Measures
  1. Update your software and system.

  2. Scan regularly with anti-virus and anti-spy-ware software.

  3. Get Internet firewall software.

  4. Be careful what you download. Use a reputable vendor and steer clear of freeware.

  5. DO NOT share your computer or passwords.

  6. Do not respond to emails requesting personal information.

  7. Remember to Log-Off completely.

  8. Delete temporary Internet files and clear all "History."

  9. Do not run .exe files sent via email or open email attachments from unknown sources.

  10. Act immediately if you suspect your computer is infected.
Other Useful Tips and Information
  • Password Protection- Never give anyone your password - they do not need it. And do not store your passwords on your computer or write it down. If you are called by an agent of a firm and asked for your password, take their number and call the main office back-it is mostly likely a scam.

  • Emails- Do not run .exe files or open email attachments from unknown sources. Delete emails from sales or from any suspicious sources. Instant messaging (IM) presents the same security problems as email.

  • Do Not Share Your Computer- Make sure that file and print sharing are turned off; they open your computer to other users.

  • Internet Files- Delete temporary Internet files and clear your "History" frequently. Set low limits in Internet Explorer's "Internet Options".

  • Log-Off Completely- Always log-off from an application when you leave and close the application or browser. ALWAYS log out of email - best policy switch off - remember DSL and Cable are open ports.

  • Careful When Buying Online- Not all sites are secure and remember email is not usually encrypted. Go to a credible website so credit card numbers and passwords cannot be easily stolen.
